- Improvements to the pump and filter system
- Netting to keep the frogs and Heron out. We lost 3 fish last year to the Blue Heron.
- Begin to use organic nutrients to supplement the system
- Fine tune the Bell Siphons (this is an on-going effort)
2016 started off with yet a new problem. The pond was starting to get over-taken with String Algae. Our research (here is a link to review: https://nualgiponds.com/how-to-get-rid-of-string-algae-in-your-pond/) helped us to begin removal. If ignored, the aldae will starve the plants of vital nutrients.
Here is a list of some additives that we have tried:
- MaxiCrop Plus Iron, Liquified Seaweed: This did a great job adding nutrients to the plants. we were also testing low in iron and this was a great way of adding it.
- Algae Control - Nualgi Ponds Fish Health. A little bit goes a long way in controlling the string algae. This product worked well for us. Just a warning: When you kill off algae you may get a cloudy look in the water, this is just the dead algae and your filter should take care of it.
- AquaDown pH Lowering Agent. This product did a good job helping to bring our pH below 7.0
- The fish food is also important, we have been using AquaOrganic Aquaponics Fish Feed. They seem to like it
