Spring 2014

This is the first spring experience with the greenhouse. Winter was long, cold and filled with lessons to learn. Today is May 4, and the heater finally got turned off, with hopes the temperature will not drop below 40 degrees at night. The dirt planting rule was not to plant outside until nighttime temperatures were a minimum of 50 but with the greenhouse protection, 40 seems reasonable. If wrong, it will be chalked up to another lesson learned.

Pictures here show that state of growing as of today. All things shown were started from seed. (With the exception of the parsley, thyme and sage as they were hold overs from last year.) The basil was started and enjoyed in an Aerogrow inside the house throughout the winter. As the plants grew, pieces were clipped off and rerouted in water. Once the roots were big enough and the plant seemed happy, they got transferred to the greenhouse. The basil shown in these pictures were planted a few weeks ago.

The thyme shown above actually grew such an enormous root ball, it had to be moved from the tube above to the bed because the roots were blocking the water flow needed for the rest of the tube plants.
Lettuce usually grows very well in these cups although it's still a challenge to figure out the best way to get the seeds started. In both of these cases, the seeds were just sprinkled in the cup. Some seeds germinated, some did not.

These peas are the first ones. More seeds were planted yesterday. The first taste test yesterday of these was fantastic. Sweet, tender. So good.

This sage plant was almost removed in February because it looked so sad. Good thing it wasn't removed! It is so happy and has great flavor.
